TAOP Day on the Hill
Day on the Hill is Wednesday, January 21, and your participation this year is especially important. Together, we will meet with lawmakers, strengthen key relationships, and advocate for legislation that supports the evolving role of optometry in Tennessee.
This year’s conversations will center on modernizing the Tennessee Optometry Practice Act to better reflect today’s optometric education and training. The proposed updates would allow doctors of optometry to perform certain laser procedures—such as YAG capsulotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and peripheral iridotomy—procedures that are already part of optometric care in many states.
These updates are designed to:
- Improve timely access to eye care for Tennessee patients
- Prevent vision loss through earlier intervention
- Reduce unnecessary emergency room visits and delayed referrals
- Support continuity of care within the doctor–patient relationship
- Help retain highly trained optometry graduates here in Tennessee
